Dear Families,
Here
we are in a new school year that is thankfully similar to previous
years. We still have small class sizes, science specialists,
librarians and more... All in spite of the economy and our school
funding challenges. Generous support from people like you is
making a difference to all of our children, every day. To see how
donations to MBEF enable excellence in our schools, please review our grants for '09-'10. In
this first issue of our electronic newsletter we bring you information
on our funding situation, some perspective from MBUSD
Superintendent Bev Rohrer and highlights about our Annual
Appeal. We welcome your thoughts, questions and
participation. Our next board meeting is 11/10 at 7:30pm.

Education Funding Woes: How did we get here? |
For
2009-10 the state will give MBUSD $836 less per student
than last year. In fact, California ranks anywhere from
near last to dead last in per pupil funding, depending on your
source.
School
districts across California are relying on local funding
from parcel taxes and education foundations to compensate for
decreased state funds.
How did our once shining education system come to this?

Maintaining
Excellence in Education
Dr. Bev
Rohrer speaks about the importance of working together to support our public
schools
|

MBEF spoke with Dr. Bev Rohrer, MBUSD Superintendent
of Schools, about the funding issues facing MBUSD today and the role that
private funding plays in the equation.
"We won't let the kids down," says Dr. Rohrer who tells us how
your support is helping your child's classroom and about the
ground-breaking lobbying effort she is waging in Sacramento. Read
the full interview here. |

One MBEF Appeal. $4.1 Million Needed
|
The Annual Appeal for funds is underway. If we work together again we can meet the needs of our children for 2010-2011. Please participate in PLEDGE DAY, NOVEMBER 12. Donate
or pledge by this date so that we can gauge MBEF's level of
support in time for budget discussions for the 2010-11 school
year. You can "pledge" an amount now and choose a date or dates to
pay before June 1, 2010. There is only one appeal this year
and it will end January 31. Please consider your gift carefully
and pledge or donate at a level that is meaningful for you and
your family.
We can't control the economic forecast,
but we can protect our children from its impact in their
classrooms. This year your donations saved 84 teachers and
staff that make a difference to your child. Every donation
matters. THANK YOU! |
