  1. President’s Notes: Carolyn introduced the guests. Carolyn proposed that we hold the next meeting on June 10. In lieu of a Superintendent’s Circle meeting, Carolyn proposed that we invite the 7 teachers who will be receiving National Board Certified Teachers checks this year to our next meeting. Carolyn reported that the Vital Programs fund has collected nearly $1,400,000. Since our last meeting, we have reinstated the PE teachers. May 15 is the last date teachers can be reinstated. The annual report should be going out at the end of this week thanks to the efforts of Judy Reece. Dennis Lanfre is doing the printing, envelopes, stuffing and mailing for us at no cost. John Oshiro requested an electronic copy for the web site.

  2. Minutes: A motion to approve the minutes as submitted was made by Webster Burns, seconded by LeRoy Nelson, and approved by voice vote.

  3. Financial Report: Treasurer Gary Wayland presented financial reports through the end of April. Net income for the Backlot Ball will be just over $50,000. Donations to the Vital Programs fund totaled $1,385,615. Detailed reports included this month: Profit & Loss, showing detailed income and expenses, and Balance Sheet, showing investment account balances.

  4. Administrative Director’s Report: Susan Patterson thanked the Board for the bonuses that she and Wanda received. Everything is going smoothly.

  7. MBUSD Board of Trustee’s Report: Lynette Campbell distributed copies of the approved school calendars for next two years. The three-year teacher contract, which was “sunshined” at the last School Board meeting, includes higher medical insurance caps and an early retirement package. The MCHS bell schedule change was approved. Teachers will be compensated for writing college recommendation letters for students. Only open issue is finding replacement medical insurance provider. Teri Greene mentioned the recognition for the MCHS music department at tomorrow night’s Board Meeting. The new classroom building is occupied. The Student Services building is due to be completed January 2004. The District Office is scheduled for completion in October, move in December. The all-weather track is scheduled for completion June 12.

  8. MBEF Board Election Nominations: Richard Wennekamp presented the slate of nominees for officers and directors. The election will be held next month.

  9. Fundraising Reports:

    1. Golf Tournament: Julian Ryder reported that the committee will meet before next meeting.

    2. Membership: Richard Wennekamp reported that membership donations were only down 8% from last year, in spite of the disruption from the Vital Programs fund drive, even though the number of donations was down 34%. Super Circle membership was also down 8%. 96% of elementary classrooms and all elementary libraries and MBMS qualified for the participation bonuses. Richard was surprised that most of the families who donated to the Vital Programs fund had already donated to the membership drive. Grand View will join Robinson in donating teacher participation bonuses to the Vital Programs fund.

    3. Wine Auction: Jeff Thaler reported that the Wine Auction is doing great. He and Julian Ryder asked everyone to take posters to distribute to local businesses, especially wine stores. Sherry distributed a sign up sheet for the event. The web site is www.ManhattanWineAuction.com.

    4. Oktoberfest: Pat Parker reported that major sponsors should be lined up by end of month.

  10. Grants Committee Report: Anne McLaughlin announced that $300K was granted from Vital Programs Fund for elementary PE programs, some of which may be covered by BCHD. She requested small increases to two MCHS grants approved last month: 03-201 Choral Music +$2,200, and 03-900 Counselor +$300. A motion to approve these increases was made by Webster Burns, seconded by Anne, and approved by voice vote. Anne would like to reverse the grant for the Foreign Language lab.

Webster Burns reported that MBMS would like to restore one counselor. A motion to approve a grant of $63,000 was made by Webster, seconded by Pat Parker, and approved by voice vote. Carol asked about the Young At Art grant. Carol will let the Young At Art committee chairs know that they need to submit a grant request.

  11. Old Business / New Business: Freddi Segal-Gidan asked Carolyn if she had contacted the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation about supporting MCHS. Carolyn said she had not.

John Oshiro has complimentary copies of MBMS instrumental music concert CDs.

  12. Meeting Adjourned: 8:48 PM.

  13. Next Meeting: Tuesday, June 10, 2003, 7:30 PM at Mira Costa High School, Room 115.
