Manhattan Beach Education Foundation
Special Board Meeting Minutes – March 18, 2003

Meeting Place: Anne McLaughlin’s residence

Directors voting by proxy (5/25): Webster Burns, Chuck Kaminski, Greg Rosen, Carol Rowe, Ida VanderPoorte

Directors present for the vote (16/25): Geoff Bremer, Webster Burns, Wendy Carson, Randy Dotemoto, Mike Dunitz, Craig Kline, Carolyn Leserman, Anne McLaughlin, LeRoy Nelson, John Oshiro, Pat Parker, Judy Reece, Julian Ryder, Freddi Segal-Gidan, Jeff Thaler, Gary Wayland, Richard Wennekamp

Directors who arrived after the vote: Ruth Graf-Urasaki, Kim Siehl

Call to Order: 7:35 PM by President Carolyn Leserman.

  1. Resolution: The resolution was read by Anne McLaughlin:
“RESOLVED THAT the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation agrees to provide $15,696 of funds to maintain security personnel at the Manhattan Beach Middle School and Mira Costa High School ($7,183 and $8,513, respectively) for the balance of the 2002 / 2003 school year. This temporary funding is conditioned on the agreement of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District that it will not request that MBEF fund these or other security positions for the 2003 / 2004 school year.”

Gary Wayland moved approval of the resolution. Pat Parker seconded the motion. Carolyn emphasized that this funding is for one year only. Carolyn mentioned that two members who were voting by proxy had expressed concerns about setting a bad precedent by funding non-academic positions. The motion passed with all directors voting in favor except for two proxy votes.

  2. Backlot Ball: Carolyn asked directors to support the Backlot Ball. We have sold approximately 600 of 800 tickets. The directed donation campaign has detracted from ticket sales. We have passed the break-even point for this event. MBEF expects to spend approximately $30,000 for promotion of the event. The Entertainment Industry Foundation is putting approximately $100,000 into the event.

  3. Meeting Adjourned: 7:50 PM.

Respectfully submitted by LeRoy Nelson on March 18, 2003
